Document Type: Letter

Date: December 11, 1943

Location: POW Camp in Oran, Algeria

Author: George D. Pence, Colonel G.S.C. Chief of Staff

Subject: Local civilians upset with American abuse of hunting regulations

Summary: Colonel George D. Pence informs the American soldiers that the locals are upset with the Americans’ abuse of their hunting rights. French authorities and civilians in Morocco and Algeria have filed numerous complaints about the Americans’ reckless slaughtering of game, most notably gazelles. The letter then emphasizes that the killing of gazelles is strictly prohibited outside of special hunting areas. Initially, the locals were tolerant of the Americans’ reasonable hunting of gazelles, wild sheep, and wild turkey, but became upset once the soldiers abused their hunting privileges. Because of this abuse, the hunting of these animals was declared strictly prohibited. The letter goes on to declare that hunting had to be in line with the local government’s rules, and that Americans must attain hunting licenses.
